About Me

Welcome to the new, and improved version of Heaven in Belgium. I am Jientje. "Jientje", like the boys name Gene, followed by "chu"? "Gene-chu", that's how you pronounce my name. Yes!!!!That's it!! So now you know huh? I am an addicted blogger. I was born and raised and am still living in Belgium. Yeah, the "this-is- Tuesday-so-this-must-be-Brussels" kind of Belgium .. There, you see? Maybe you couldn't find it on the map, but at least I'm trying to change that a little by sharing lots of pictures. I really love to cook and create new things, like this blog for instance. I am a mother,a grandmothe and a wife too! They say I'm a traveler, and a photographer. Well that's just what they say, I love to make pictures, but I am far from professional ... If my English is not perfect, that would be because it's my second language. I do hope you'll forgive me any possible misspellings or strange vocabulary ... Now, as a result of all of the above, I get way too little sleep and my days are always much too short!

Booby Wonderland ...

This week’s theme for Thematic Photography is “odd”.
It’s the first time I’m joining this meme and I must admit, I was a bit at a loss at first. But then I started browsing through my Provence pictures and found these. I had almost forgotten all about them!

We were driving to Forcalquier

Map picture

one day, when this red wagon popped into my eye view. Not so much the wagon and the people working on the field caught my attention…

but this alien landscape did …

My husband suggested to turn the car and return to the spot to investigate this unusual sight. And take pictures of course!

Rows and rows of white domes, shining in the sun.
It looked like a field of boobs ….
I mean, look at that? Is that odd or what?

I had never seen anything like it before and we never saw fields like such again. I think it was a field of endives and possibly they use the domes to protect the plants from the sun, maybe to keep the heart white? Or something?
I’m not really sure and I’d love to know. If any of you have a better explanation, please let me know in a comment, okay?

Update: Quilly just came up with the answer to this, I will quote her comment:
"And I have your answer, although I like your explanation better! It seems endive only grows after dark (which is why it's so pale), so the domes are used to extend the darkness and encourage the endive to grow more! They are used when the endive isn't planted in the shade. I love Google!"
Thank you so much Quilly! I'll finally be able to sleep tonight! LOL!

LOL! I totally thought the same thing when I first saw your photos. I thought it looked like a field of boobs :)

I'm quite curious what they are used for.

Hahah...no matter what the real explanation is, I much prefer field of boobs. :-)

Hahaha ! Bras are missing ! Wonderful odd ! I do "Odd Shots" each monday and it's really a funny theme.
I am certainly home from 5 am (hehehe) until 10.30, then I am out for 2 h, swimming ! If I don't answer after that, I drowned !

ROFL, My hubby would have suggested having a closer look too Jientje lol, at first I thought they were some kind of funky mushroom (my eyes are not good hehe). Brilliant photographs and perfect for this meme. Haven't a clue what they are but I would guess at least a "Double D" cup, happy Thursday, Kathy.

Wow...this is truly odd and a sight to see! I have to send it to my friend who used to live in Provence. I bet you are right though, it must be to protect endives from light. Spectacular!

That is absolutely hilarious, and yes, definitely odd as well.

PS I've been trying to comment all day but you're blog kept shutting down when I tried to open it?

Good one Jientje - Maybe I'll do some research on this and see what I can find out!

that is odd, but made for some great pictures. . . and I'm sure somewhere there is a happy man there in booby land LOL!

You didn't ask? Were you shy that day dear sister? I wonder what it is too! Boobyland, nice! No wonder hubby turned and stopped! Hehehehe
Big hug!
Your little sister,

That required a double take, looks like everyman's dream to walk thru a field of boobs! Good one, Jientje!!

@ Geert: Ik heb niet direct een andere uitleg.
@ Rebecca: Thanks, I thought this was worth sharing, turns out this was the right time to do it!
@ Wanda: I can't think of any other reason?
@ moneythoughts: Boobs. Nothing better to get a little attention! LOL!
@ Kirsti: I told you!
@ Sandy: Yeah, loved it when I saw that!
@ Jacki: You're not alone in this!
@ Gattina: Early bird! I'll call you, but not at 5 am. Make sure you don't drown, it would ruin our get together!
@ Kathy: Double G? Triple H? LOL!
@ MrsLittleJeans: I think so too.
@ Robin: Very odd indeed.
@ Libby: I sure hope you can find something!
@ Kaye: There must be.
@ Bientje: No sis, I did not ask! And I was not having an off day either!

@ Becky: I'm sure it is!
@ Jan: Thanks!

The booby hatch LOL. Could you imagine having to make a bra that size? LOL That is the oddest thing I've ever seen I agree. Great photos and they fit the them very very well. :)

Very cool pics, and I love the progressive shots as we get in closer!

How much do boobs GO by the pound over there? I might could make some serious money! LOL! THAT is the funniest site I have ever seen! I've never even seen an endive field - or any other lettuce field either! As a matter of fact, all I ever get to see is corn, soy beans, and tobacco... and precious LITTLE tobacco anymore!

I forgot all about Thematic Photographic this week... I suspect I'll be forgetting it next week too! You'll have to get me back on track after that! I'm sure you WIN for ODDEST this week though!

Love the "boob" analogy. I thought they were alien bra cups!

And I have your answer, although I like your explanation better! It seems endive only grows after dark (which is why it's so pale), so the domes are used to extend the darkness and encourage the endive to grow more! They are used when the endive isn't planted in the shade. I love Google!

Well, I really DO like the true story but WHAT a sight and how confounding to wonder, "What the HECK?!"

Jientje said...

@ Thom: I prefer them a few sizes smaller, thank you!
@ Heather: *gigles back*
@ Lilacspecs: *snort*
@ lissa: a bit like zooming in eh?
@ Melli: I don't know, aren't they worth their weight in gold? LOL! Dion't worry, I'll get you back on track, just don't forget the idioms on Wednesday, okay?
@ Quilly: And I love YOU!! Thank you for looking this up, I have updated the post with your comment!
@ Dr John: They might look great for a photo story? Maybe I should send you some?
@ 2 Thinks: Yes, that's correct.
@ Tammie Lee: It's pretty unique for me too, never seen any like this since then.
@ Light and Voices: Thank you. I hope you did not get hurt?
@ Robynn: Indeed, what a sight!
