About Me

My photo
Antwerp, Belgium
Welcome to the new, and improved version of Heaven in Belgium. I am Jientje. "Jientje", like the boys name Gene, followed by "chu"? "Gene-chu", that's how you pronounce my name. Yes!!!!That's it!! So now you know huh? I am an addicted blogger. I was born and raised and am still living in Belgium. Yeah, the "this-is- Tuesday-so-this-must-be-Brussels" kind of Belgium .. There, you see? Maybe you couldn't find it on the map, but at least I'm trying to change that a little by sharing lots of pictures. I really love to cook and create new things, like this blog for instance. I am a mother, not a grandmother,I don't know if I'll ever be, but I'll let you know in due time! Oh and um ... I am a wife too! They say I'm a traveler, and a photographer. Well that's just what they say, I love to make pictures, but I am far from professional ... If my English is not perfect, that would be because it's my second language. I do hope you'll forgive me any possible misspellings or strange vocabulary ... Now, as a result of all of the above, I get way too little sleep and my days are always much too short!

Macro Monday

These will most probably please Quilly and the Amoeba who led me to this beautiful little creature. I’ll need the scientific brain of the Amoeba to remember his name though. Amoeba?

As you can see, the little one was most eager to get his picture taken. He was not at all shy and he posed willingly.

Weekend Reflections

This week’s reflection is the museum at Great Falls reflected in the canal. They took the boat through the lock and then drew it by horse as a historical evocation of how transportation over water took place a hundred years or more ago.

Wordless?

Wordless or not Wordless, that's the question.

It's been a week since I got hompe and I'm still not recovered from my trip.
But I do know I still miss you guys. Wish I was there too.

Have a great Thanksgiving week.
Love you all,
endlessly

The Trick or Treat Pizza Party

One of the many highlights of the days I spent at Melli’s was the trick or treat event with Luz. I’m so happy I opted for that one when Melli gave me the choice, it was a photographer’s treat, I tell you.

Vampire drink. I love that one.

IMG_2834

No need for fancy earrings when you’re eating!

IMG_2840

Although good manners DO give you a certain distinction, I agree.

So does a straight back and an elegant posture.

Look at her, isn’t she darling?
IMG_2874

One more.
It’s so hard to choose, but she stole my heart.
She said she was a witch, and I believe her. She looks fearless, doesn’t she?

By the way, for those of you who are dying (please don't) to see more pictures of me, I'm uploading ten more each day on my JPG site. You may be asked to submit an account if you want to comment, I'm not sure. If not you can always comment here about the Chicago pictures I'm featuring there, can't you?

Friday’s Fave Five Melli and Mom and the lighthouse …

FFF fall leaves 2

Friday again.
Now where did that week go?
Never mind …

Where did three weeks go would probably sound more like it!

I made a Fave Five out of one of my photo walks with Mom and Melli today.

I got to visit
1.  Calvert Marine Museum
including
2. the tour of the lighthouse which is famous for its
3. well kept antiques interior.
4. Melli bought me a very cute T-shirt I just LOVE wearing
and we had
5. a wonderful crab meal in the restaurant afterwards. Craving a Mojito after that meal lasted the whole tour! Honest! I wonder why … hmmm?

there were many more sweet memories from my stay at Melli’s home, but <i’ll get back to that later…
So much to do and only so many hours in a day …

Golden memories …

I’m Baaaaaack!!!!!

Hey there, my dear friends and readers of this blog. I’m so sorry, I’ve been such a bad blogger lately. But there is a good reason for this, my little notebook died on me while I was staying at Melli ‘s house, and getting online became a huge problem.
I was able to log in on Thom’s notebook during my stay at Quilly’s house but by then I was so behind with all my stuff I did not even had time to download my own pictures, let alone answer comments or read blogs …
I’m going to have to MAAR  ( mark all as read ) most of the posts in my reader, I’m sorry. There is no way I’m going to get caught up again if I don’t do this!

I’ll try to download a couple of pictures from the last days of my trip, starting with my arrival in Chicago early in the morning. My good friend Lou was there to pick me up at the airport, and together we drove off into the sunrise. Ten pictures can be seen here.

The photo walk we made was very inspiring for the both of us and more pictures will be available as soon as possible. I PROMISE !!!

Meanwhile I’m back in Belgium trying to fight off my jet lag. Please don’t get angry with me if I’m not around as much as I want to, there is still loads and loads of photo work to be done right now. I still have not seen all of my pictures yet , can you imagine that?

To all my dear friends I met during this trip, THANKS again for all the things you did for me. You were great, and you are all in my heart. This was such an overwhelming experience! Thank you so much for making it possible to live my dream …

Got to go!

Hi,

Just a quickie to let you know I'm doing well.
I really got to get to the airport in time, and Mr Google really is not cooperating!
Got to go,
really cannot afford to miss another plane.

My nickname Jientje

Some new readers might wonder about my nickname, I got so many questions about that in the past I wrote a post about it, a long time ago.
I’ll blow the dust off of that one and post it again …

You see, there is a story to that name, it IS a name that really means a lot to me.

It all started in the early eighties, when I had just moved to Antwerp to start a new life with the love of my life. We had both been married before, still going through a divorce and my mother-in-law refused to accept her son's choice. Months passed by before she finally put aside stubbornness and prejudice and agreed to come visit us.
I was going to meet them for the first time and that really made me pretty nervous.
As soon as I heard the doorbell I got shaky knees and moist, sweaty hand palms.
All I wanted was to just disappear off the face of the earth, .... become very small and invisible .... hide in a flowerpot, or in a teacup for that matter, .... whatever,
anything to save me from this moment I dreaded and wanted at the same time.
Of course I desperately wanted to meet them, but at the same time I was really very very scared to get hurt again. We had been through a lot at that point.
My father-in-law stepped into the living room with his arms wide open,
welcoming me with a real BIG HUG, stealing my heart right there and then.
As he approached me he nicknamed me ... Jientje.
Sadly enough, a few years later he died, and that nickname almost died with him.
My mother in law turned her back against us again and hardly anybody called me Jientje anymore.

When I started blogging I had to choose a nickname, and that was when I decided I would call myself Jientje again.
My nickname Jientje tells the story of being accepted for who and what I am ...

Macro Monday

Charlotte Perkins Gilman:

... while we flatter ourselves that things remain the same, they are changing under our very eyes from year to year, from day to day.

We went up to the heart of Washington DC to take a look at the house and the neighborhood where Melli was born into. It was a good feeling to see that her old house was still there . It is a quaint little neighborhood, in huge contrast with the surrounding business and shopping areas like Bloomingdales to name one. Even the cracks in the sidewalk are still there after all those years!
However ...

This is probably not going to be there much longer, that's why I am so happy she took me there and that I was able to take pictures there.
On our way over to the Italian restaurant where we had lunch a little bit later on, we saw this unique bug. I'm really rather curious what kind of bug this is, but to me he looks like his species have been around like for a million years! If the story I heard is correct, he is a stink bug. He has managed to survive instead of going extinct because nobody has the desire to kill this guy.
Because if you do, he will stink so much, you' ll probably remember him forever! LOL!!

Today is going to be a very busy day for me, because I will be saying goodbye to Melli and her family, travel to the west coast and meet other friends. I have warm memories and feelings for them, they really really wore themselves out to make my visit something I will never ever forget. I carry them in my heart. Saying goodbye to them is really going to be hard ...

Time to get my stuff together now!

Weekly Winners, Sense and Nonsense about Halloween

logo wwfinal

Some random pictures I took two days ago.
Again straight from the camera, they have not been edited in any way.

Halloween, seen through my eyes.

Witches, and funny things happening behind your back ...
Or maybe things you cannot explain.

Learning, exploring ...
Trying to figure it out.

Fossils and all things buried ...

Light bulb moments?

The old man and the sea ...

Down down, deeper and down ...
