Doel, The Ghost Town Part Two

This is part two of my series of Doel. Part one is here, please click the link if you haven't seen part one yet. Go look at those pictures first, it's important that you get the whole story. Oh and don't forget to come back tomorrow for part three.


Doel is a village near the river the Schelde which is known for its nuclear power plant. Doel has become a ghost town. The whole village is doomed to disappear because of the future enlargement of the harbor of Antwerp. Most people have felt forced to leave their properties.

Only very few houses are still lived in.



Most of the properties have been abandoned.



Silent protest ...






Soon it will all be history ...

Weekly Winners, Doel, the Ghost Town

Doel is a village by the river the Schelde near Antwerp.





The nuclear power plant is in its front yard ...



The people of Doel had to leave their houses and make way for the plans to expand the harbor of Antwerp. Doel has turned into a ghost town.


The entire village is up for demolition.



Old houses ...



valuable ones ...



and not so valuable ones ...



They were all homes to someone ...



Now nature is taking over ...



and so do the graffiti painters.

Friday's Fave Five, a Fabulous Week

The last Friday of February already! Time to join Susanne's Friday's Fave Five at Living to tell the story by sharing the highlights of the week that has passed.
It's been a fabulous week for me, I hardly know where to begin!



1. We celebrated our 30th anniversary this weekend. I cooked up a little gourmet dinner with all our favorite food, and we had a lovely evening with romantic music and candlelight. I did a post on it here.

2. My camera is repaired! So glad I have my Big Guy back and that it's functioning again! Can you believe I took loads of photos this week?

3. The new car! My hubby bought a new car and we took it for a spin last night. I felt like a princess in a silver carriage, it's beautiful!

4. Some extra time together with my hubby. He took two days off and we went photo hunting together in the Zwalm region on Tuesday. The Zwalm region is a very photogenic region in Belgium even now while it's still Winter and nature still looks a bit gray and dull.

5. The sunset I photographed there, isn't it breathtaking?

Monthly Theme: the Marina

We're finally getting a little bit of Winter here in Belgium. It's very cold and it snowed yesterday.
I know readers in Canada (and other countries with a cold climate) will probably laugh out loud when they see the amount of snow we had. I know, it's just a little sprinkling, a transparent layer, and it would have melted in two hours had it not been so cold. I went down to the marina this morning to take some pictures to use for my monthly theme and my fingers nearly froze off! My fingers were so numb I could not even push the shutter anymore!

I was busy taking pictures when suddenly this lady walked up from behind me. "This is going to be perfect for my monthly theme" I thought instantly, and quickly pushed the shutter.

I'm planning on making this a monthly theme. I know it's not February yet, but hey... You can see my first post here.

My favorite photos this week are from the Chateau Marnix de Sainte Aldegonde in Bornem.
It looks like a castle from a fairy tale, and is completely furnished and decorated inside, as the owners still live in it. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take photos inside, but the beautiful views of the castle and the river Schelde where it is situated made me glad I did bring my camera!

Friday's Fave Five, Visiting a Chateau

It's Friday again, time to reflect on the week that has passed and post about five favorite things from your week. Friday's Fave Five is hosted by Susanne at Living to Tell the Story, if you're looking for the rules, they're here.

It's been a beautiful week, with some very nice sunny days, and of course a little bit of rain as well. We wouldn't know we were in Belgium if it were different!



1. Sunday morning breakfast. I always try to make it a little bit special. This week was very special because the weather was nice enough to be able to eat outside in the sun. The new cups and bowls made the table extra cheerful. Because I'm still watching my weight, I made a low calorie version of eggy bread. I used sweetener instead of sugar and used the oil spray to grease the pan to bake them in. I served it with fresh strawberries and low fat fresh cheese.

2. We visited Chateau Marnix de Sainte Aldegonde in Bornem. A beautiful castle, exceptionally open to the public. The owners still live in it, and it is completely furnished and decorated. We were not allowed to take photos inside though, but the views outside were also stunning, so I still was glad I brought my camera.

3. Cows. Whenever I see cows, I want to photograph them!

4. My Weight Watcher's cookbook. I love to read in it and get ideas for low calorie meals, snacks, breakfasts and lunches. There are lots and lots of delicious recipes in it, I already tried a couple of them and they were a great success.

5. Fresh soup. Nothing like a good bowl of fresh soup with a slice of homemade bread!
Absolutely no calories ( well hey, OK correction ... very low calorie ) and very satisfying!

Weekly Winners, Fog and Boats

 

 

The weather was very foggy all day on Tuesday so I grabbed “the big guy” and took him for a short walk along the canal. I love Mother Nature’s natural depth of field and how my photos turn into almost black and white.
