About Me

My photo
Antwerp, Belgium
Welcome to the new, and improved version of Heaven in Belgium. I am Jientje. "Jientje", like the boys name Gene, followed by "chu"? "Gene-chu", that's how you pronounce my name. Yes!!!!That's it!! So now you know huh? I am an addicted blogger. I was born and raised and am still living in Belgium. Yeah, the "this-is- Tuesday-so-this-must-be-Brussels" kind of Belgium .. There, you see? Maybe you couldn't find it on the map, but at least I'm trying to change that a little by sharing lots of pictures. I really love to cook and create new things, like this blog for instance. I am a mother,a grandmothe and a wife too! They say I'm a traveler, and a photographer. Well that's just what they say, I love to make pictures, but I am far from professional ... If my English is not perfect, that would be because it's my second language. I do hope you'll forgive me any possible misspellings or strange vocabulary ... Now, as a result of all of the above, I get way too little sleep and my days are always much too short!

Lotus missed posting a couple of times and I missed her Weekly Winners meme.
Anyway, she's back now and I'm doing an XXL Weekly Winners with my favorite pictures of the last couple of weeks!
Check out what the others have posted at Lotus' I am Lotus, the homeblog of Weekly Winners.

Weekly Winners, Fog and Boats

weeklywinnersaugust2010

The weather was very foggy all day on Tuesday so I grabbed “the big guy” and took him for a short walk along the canal. I love Mother Nature’s natural depth of field and how my photos turn into almost black and white.

The colors of Fall were more vibrant this year than I’ve ever seen before. I could not get enough of it, so here are a few more photos of Park ten Brandt …

Friday’s Fave Five, homeliness and coziness

FFF fall background

Susanne at Living to Tell the Story hosts this meme called Fave Five where one can reflect on the week and share some of the highlights from it.

fave five

So here we go …

1. That lovely pink sunrise I saw yesterday. The minute I saw this gorgeous pink and purple glow I got my camera out and shot a few pictures. From where I am I cannot see the actual sun, but I did enjoy all the beautiful colors in the early morning sky.
It really made my day!

2. We went out and had a lovely walk in a beautiful park near Antwerp on Sunday.
I took my Big Guy ( my Canon 40D ) along and really enjoyed all the wonderful colors and photo opportunities fall had to offer! After the walk we had some warm apple pie and I sipped my first hot wine of the season.

3. When I got home I made some fresh onion soup with lots and lots of cheese on top! We drew the curtains, made a nice fire in the fireplace and lit some candles.
Life is so good!

4. I’ve been looking for it ever since an American friend of mine told me about it and it’s been over a year ago now! Wrigley’s 5 chewing gum is finally available in Belgium. It’s the only chewing gum that does not loose it’s flavor after two minutes.
She was right, I like it a lot!

5. The gourmet meal me and my friend Annie cooked on Saturday. The picture in the bottom right was our main course, venison with endive mash and a little salad with red beets and apple. The meat was cooked just right and we made a lovely sauce to go with it, it was heavenly!

As you can see, I had a lovely week, how was yours?

Friday’s Fave Five,Where Has the Week Gone to?

friday fave five 12

Where has this week gone to? I’ve been very busy lately,  so busy that I hardly found the time to post on my blog. But I don’t want to miss out on Friday’s Fave Five, the meme which makes us look back and share some of the highlights of the week that has passed.

fave five september 17th

1. My Hubby was home early on Thursday evening, and he had no appointments on Friday, which made for a very LONG weekend for us to enjoy. But long weekends seem to whizz by even faster!
2. The bike ride we made on Saturday. We rode through heath land and the scenery was breathtaking. This time I had not forgotten my camera so I took some photos, but they don’t do it justice. The pink landscape was a lot prettier in real life than my photos turned out to be!
3. Mushrooms. One of the things I like about Fall. I love to photograph them, but I like to eat them as well, well, … store bought ones that is!
4. At the moment my house is filled with the lovely aromas of the brown veal stock I am making. It takes twelve hours of gentle simmering before I can strain it and let it cool down. I’m going to deepfreeze small portions of it and it will give some real depth of flavor to my sauces this Winter.
5. We visited my Mom and spent a lovely afternoon with my sisters and the rest of the family on Wednesday. Nine people at my Mom’s dinner table and she loved it! I’m really glad my Mom is doing so well after her surgery!

Wednesday Wisdom

IMG_8547

"I will not die an unlived life. I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire.
I choose to inhabit my days, to allow my living to open me, to make me less afraid, more accessible, to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise.
I choose to risk my significance; to live so that which comes to me as seed goes to the next as blossom and that which comes to me as blossom, goes on as fruit."

Friday’s Fave Five, Reflections …

FFF fall leaves 2

Another week has passed, time to look back and celebrate the good stuff…

fave five oct 16

Saturday was a very busy day.
1. We had to meet the other members of the photography class at the crack of dawn for  a photo walk. It had been raining all night long and I was a little bit worried we’d have to walk in the rain for three hours but we did manage to keep it dry, there was only a little drizzle near the end of the walk. We were told to select our ten best pictures to be reviewed during our last session on Tuesday.
2. Our daughter Patsy invited us for a little get together and a birthday dinner on Saturday evening. We had a lovely evening together. We cooked fresh pasta from scratch while catching up with the latest tidings of our lives. The food was delicious and so was the wine, before we knew it it was two o’clock in the morning! WOOT!
3. On Monday I got a lovely bouquet of white roses from the family I cook for each week. A week early for my birthday, but the boys insisted they wanted to be there to present me the flowers, isn’t that sweet?
4. We all made the same photo walk, and the review of the pictures was a very interesting experience.
( If you’re curious about mine, I took the ones I used for my Weekend Reflection and Weekly Winners post )
I really did not think much of my own pictures, in fact I had been a bit disappointed when I got home. I thought they were all very gray and gloomy. It was only when I saw what the others had that I realized it was just how it was that day, we all had gloomy foggy pictures.
But I almost fell off my chair when my teacher asked permission to use my puddle-fence-reflection picture for his creative photography presentation! The next students will all get to see this picture! I think that was a wonderful compliment.
5. The rest of the week has been all about getting ready for my trip to the States.
I did most of my shopping yesterday and my list of things to do before I leave is getting shorter every day.
A friend gave me a little notebook laptop I can use, and I downloaded most of the programs I’m going to need while I travel. It already had a Skype account, which is going to be very useful when I want to “phone home” or talk to my friends halfway across the world! I downloaded Skype on my home computer as well and I think it’s great! And … it’s FREE as well!

So there, I hope your week was as nice as mine was !

Macro Monday, Raindrops

In a silver chain
Of evening rain,
Unraveled from the tumbling main...
