Like the sleeping cat and the lady at the grocery store, this is another photo I took in Ménerbes. I’m not sure if the name of the village rings any bell, but Ménerbes was the hometown of Peter Mayle. It is where he wrote “A year in Provence” and many other best seller books about daily life in Provence. I’m sure Peter Mayle would be able to invent a story around this photo.
Now I don’t have his writer skills, but this image sure tickles my imagination. It makes me wonder what it would be like to be ten years old, living in Provence maybe or staying with an aunt or an uncle. Is he hanging out with his best friend or perhaps the other boy is his nephew? Were they running errands for the lady next door?
Or did they pick a basket full of fresh cherries from their grandfather’s orchard?

Remember the old train? Everything about it was photogenic, but especially loved the door.
The honey color of the wood. Old leather, shiny handles and bilingual signs instructing the travelers how to operate the door, I loved it.
This is a non smoking compartment. The signs show how to open and close the handle but also warns the passengers not to open the door while the train is still moving.
And the B? the B is the old logo of the Belgian Railroad Company.

No. In case you’re wondering, no, I did not go any further than this. I might have been trespassing when I walked into the little alleyway leading up to these doors but I used my camera as an excuse. I must have looked like a tourist with my Big Guy hanging around my neck and it suited me just fine. I was so ready to play that role if someone had objected to my presence there! A door opening into another door is one of my favorite subjects so I really could not resist taking a good shot at this!

Today I want to take you inside Poeke Castle.
Let’s start with a little history lesson first…
“It is unknown when the first fortification was constructed at Poeke, but references to it appear from 1139 onwards.
During the revolt of Ghent in 1452 against Philip the Good, the castle was taken by the Ghent militia. On 5 July 1452 Philip retook it, and had the Ghent militia present executed and the castle destroyed. Rebuilding it most likely took over a century.
In 1872, Baron Victor Pycke de Peteghem (1835 - 1875 bought the estates. He immediately initiated rebuilding works that lasted until 1875. The third building layer was integrated in a higher roof, and the interior and the gardens were renovated. There hardly remain any elements dating from before 1872. Additionally, the French garden was turned into an English garden.
Baroness Ines Pycke de Peteghem, was the last resident and owner of the castle.
In 1977 the castle and its 56 ha. park became the property of the municipality of Aalter, which now uses it for cultural meetings and festivities.” (Source Wikipedia)

I know I promised photos from inside the castle, but it will have to wait just a little while longer. I visited my family in Bruges yesterday, so I was out all day and I had no time to edit the photos. Instead I’m sharing this lovely door I discovered on one of my recent photo walks in Antwerp.

I’m usually very drawn to beautiful or interesting doors, but I often forget to pay attention when it comes to photograph windows. I immediately fell in love with this old shop door. It’s a little eating place and the sign on the door says “it’s a pity, we’re closed”. The Muscari in the window display looked so sunny it made me want to include part of the the window as well.
But when I walked around the corner, I discovered real art painted on the blinds!

Don’t ask me why, but I like doors, especially the ones with character.
But never before has a door made me hungry … until I came across this one.
I really loved this door of an Italian restaurant with the menu specials chalked on it.
“… Baked scallops with radicchio with a dill and grapefruit dressing.
Braised turbot with fresh tomatoes, olives and basil.
Veal kidneys with shallots and balsamic vinegar… “

One of the beautiful old houses of the Leysstraat in Antwerp reflected in a modern office building across the street. This is one of the first pictures I took on my very first photo walk in Antwerp with my Big Guy. Now, according to the weatherman, the sky will clear by noon, we’re going to get some fairly warm temperatures for this time of the year. We might even get some sunny spells today. I have already seen some blue patches appear, so I’m going to get my gear ready, hop on the bus and hit the town! See you!

Snow attributes neatly arranged against the wall is what caught my eye here. It is probably a common sight in the Ardennes, but not where I live. We don’t get all that much snow.
This little display reminded me of my former neighbor who had a hardware store. We could always tell when and if snow was predicted. Each time he put a sled and a snow scraper out on display in front of his shop we knew he was hoping there would be enough snow for him to finally be able to sell his stuff. When the snow threat was over, he’d put them inside again. Each year, these items remained unsold and they disappeared to the back of the store again.
Until the next Winter, when the first snow was predicted …

Is it a Window Views or a Sepia Scenes? Or both?
I mean, it’s almost a sepia, it has a door … as well as lots of windows.
And it’s definitely grainy. Sorry for that.
I photographed this gallery at the Franciscan Monastery in Washington DC.
A peaceful hidden place which is usually what I prefer to see when I travel or visit a town.
I mean, I can find the White House on Google Images, can’t I?
Besides … they’d never allow me to take pictures in there.
But there were lots and lots of photo opportunities inside the monastery when we took the guided tour…
… as well as outside.
