About Me

Welcome to the new, and improved version of Heaven in Belgium. I am Jientje. "Jientje", like the boys name Gene, followed by "chu"? "Gene-chu", that's how you pronounce my name. Yes!!!!That's it!! So now you know huh? I am an addicted blogger. I was born and raised and am still living in Belgium. Yeah, the "this-is- Tuesday-so-this-must-be-Brussels" kind of Belgium .. There, you see? Maybe you couldn't find it on the map, but at least I'm trying to change that a little by sharing lots of pictures. I really love to cook and create new things, like this blog for instance. I am a mother,a grandmothe and a wife too! They say I'm a traveler, and a photographer. Well that's just what they say, I love to make pictures, but I am far from professional ... If my English is not perfect, that would be because it's my second language. I do hope you'll forgive me any possible misspellings or strange vocabulary ... Now, as a result of all of the above, I get way too little sleep and my days are always much too short!

Friday's Fave Five, Quality Time with my Daughter

It's Friday, time to join Susanne's Friday's Fave Five again. The idea of this meme is to look back upon the week that has passed and post about five things that have made your week special.

1. I'm so glad my Mom is recovering well after her operation. She needed surgery to take care of an incisional hernia that appeared a couple of weeks ago. She is doing great, and she is going to be home very soon.

2. My daughter's birthday. That was a week ago last Thursday, but we celebrated it with a little family dinner and some quality time together on Saturday. It's SO nice to have her home.

3. Weight loss. Trying to loose weight is an eternal battle for me. Some may remember I lost some weight last year, but I gained it all back during Winter. Finally I joined Weight Watchers at the end of May, and so far I have lost 4.4 kilos. After gaining a kilo during our long weekend in the Gaume region, I lost 1.3kg this week at the Weight Watcher's weigh in on Tuesday evening, and another half a kilo this morning.

4. Playing with my camera. I had my photography class yesterday evening, and I practiced my skills earlier this morning. I'm hoping better knowledge and practice will make me a better photographer.

5. Chili con carne, Weight Watcher's style. Chili con carne has always been a favorite of mine, but now I found this low calorie Weight Watcher's recipe. Now I can eat it more often!

Weekly Winners, the Birthday Girl

My favourite pictures from last week's birthday party for our daughter Patsy.

There's nothing like a glass of champagne to get into a festive mood.

Fridays Fave Five, Apple Pie and Primulas, and a Birthday …

friday fave five 12

Friday’s Fave Five is hosted by Susanne at Living to Tell the Story. It’s my favorite meme because it makes you look back on your week and celebrate the good things.

1. The Primulas my husband bought me as a little present for my patio garden.
I used them to decorate the table for our daughter’s birthday dinner, and as soon as the snow goes away I will plant them outside where they will add a touch of color and Spring to my patio garden.

2. Our daughter Patsy’s birthday. Her birthday was on Friday and we invited her and her husband over for a little birthday dinner on Saturday. We had a lovely evening together, catching up on the latest stories in our lives, opening presents … while enjoying our food. We had three little appetizers with our aperitif, a salmon “bonbon” with crab mayonnaise as a first starter, followed by scallops. I served quails on truffle pasta in a Lapsang Souchong cream sauce as a main course. It was delicious.

3. Warm apple pie and home made cinnamon ice cream for dessert. Need I say more?

4. The gallons of tea with honey and lemon I had yesterday and the day before have done a great job. I’m feeling a lot better already. Thanks for all the get well wishes!

5. It has been snowing again with very cold temperatures. This calls for old fashioned comfort food, so I made split pea soup again. I think I might have listed this favorite soup of mine in one of Fave Five posts some time ago, I’m not sure. It’s one of the things I like about Winter. A nice bowl of split pea soup that tastes like it did when I was still a kid.

The highlight of the week was undoubtedly my husband’s 65th birthday.
I think I’ll just let the photos tell the story …

Friday’s Fave Five, the Birthday Boy.

1. It’s my husband’s birthday today. Not just any birthday, he turned 65 today. I could not wait till midnight to start opening presents, I think I was even more excited than he was.
2. He always knows what he’s getting just looking at the box, so I outsmarted him with this giant size box. The smaller box had lots and lots of small presents hidden inside.

3. It was nothing very big really, there were chocolates, his favorite cherry beer, some perfume … a voucher for a breakfast with bubbles and one for a nice gourmet dinner I’m going to cook him.

4. But I saved the best for last. Hidden underneath the bubble plastic at the bottom of the box was another present he almost overlooked. He knew instantly it was a photo album. I guess that’s okay because I had not really bothered much to try to disguise that. I have made him a scrapbook with old and new pictures, little notes,  letters, cards … All kinds of little momentums from our life together.

He said it was the best present he ever got from me!

5. And now we’re off, celebrating some more. I won’t be on line much today, I hope you’ll forgive me?
